Mercury goes retrograde (scopes are live) on March 12, 2012 in the sign of Aries. This reflects the archetype of the Lakota/Sioux Heyoka, or ‘contrarian,’ a manifestation of the sacred trickster.
The Heyoka do not move through life in the usual way. They turn everything on its head, literally. They ride their horse backwards, say hello when they go away and goodbye when you meet. They might sleep all day, hunt at night, complain when people are happy and laugh when others grieve. With their clothes worn inside out, the Heyoka will do anything to shake up the cultural ‘norm’. That’s their job – to challenge the worn path, taken for granted ways and complacent consciousness.
Honour Mercury Rx in Aries/Pisces as Heyoka, an energy that jars our fixed or rigid ways of thinking so that we open, expand and grow. How will Mercury as Heyoka accomplish this feat? Most likely it will be in ways that make us laugh once we’ve had some distance (was it Woody Allen who said comedy was ‘tragedy plus time’?). The trickster energy throws a wrench in the usual forward motion of life so we can see our path, our values, our goals and relationships and our beliefs in new ways. The watch word is from The Matrix, when Morpheus said, free your mind!
The best approach during this time is not to soldier on, pretending nothing’s odd, or ignoring the elephant in the room. It is a time to press pause, reflect, revision and ask questions of ourselves that we never ask while in the ‘zone’.
Be prepared to reVIEW and reCONSIDER in accordance to the natal houses involved. This means checking where 6 degrees of Aries is, BACK to 23 degrees of Pisces in your natal chart. Here’s the tutorial. I would love everyone to learn how to do this, to find where in your chart any given planet or transit is at any given time. Have a go and if you need help, ask in the comments. This has me stumped Virgo on my natal chart in 28 degrees in 9th house and 8 degrees in 8th house. The only Mars I have is 20 degrees in Capricorn in 11th house.

Okay, You are Pisces rising and the opposite sign of Virgo is on your 7th house cusp, so the Rx of Mars is in your 7th house of personal, one-to-one relationships right now and Mercury is Rx in your 1st house. So ‘press pause’ on the outward drive and reflect on all your key areas of life-relationships, business, career, health and fitness, home, family, creativity. Questions your core values, not in a critical way but in a curious, ‘has anyone changed lately’, way. It’s an inner exploration.

Wow spot on- especially on the inner journey. I was abut to review where I am at after this past almost 8 months of my healing journey and today body went into rest mode .
Like the sound of super vitalizing energy- Have been painting more than writing- just started journaling in the mornings again yeaterday. The words to go with the paintings- the intuitive heart and there are many pages in journals for the book (s) to come – I like take off like wild fire- that feels good.- will see if I can make your call on Thursday.

a visiting Canadian inuit theatre troupe I saw at `The Dreaming`, Australia`s international indigenous cultural festival hosted at Woodfordia (Queensland), speaking to a young audience likened the Trickster to Wile. E. Coyote or Bugs Bunny of Warner Bros. cartoons – they can regenerate and transform themselves at will to deceive, fool or seduce… (love the toons where Bugs is in drag!).
I loved this analogy and recognise the Tricksters that cross my path with the same nonchalance and effortless aplomb that Road Runner does. The lesson from Tricksters is not to become wound up by them and react in the way that other W.B. stablemates do – Foghorn Leghorn or Elmer Fudd. Be cool and unflappable.

Mars is going retro in my 10th house and Mercury in my 5th house. Does this mean reconsider my thoughts re work and children? Could this be one way of looking at this pair of retros?
That’s the direction I would go, Stella. Also think about your ‘social identity’. Who are you out in the world? What defines you and how much of your creative spirit is woven into the ‘world view’? Do people see you as an artist, a mother, a healer, a teacher? Maybe all those things but in what proportion?
Let your mind consider these things, and also how much 5th house PLAY you have in your life compared to how much 10th house serious business.

Thanks for the heads-up! Mercury is set to go retro in my 12th house, 2 degrees shy of my rising degree, which the North Node is trining now. Communication issues concerning my emotionally needy and control-freak ex (and soon-to-be ex-husband) are coming up . . . my boyfriend has just discovered my 12-year-old online journal and loves my writing . . . and I’m about to start the first chapter of my PhD dissertation. Fingers crossed I get that divorce petition in the post soon!

Kim, I love the post and the idea of thinking about the retrograde in positive ways. BUT–the “heyoka” is not “Native American;” it is specifically Lakota/Sioux. Native American pan-tribal culture does have certain characteristics, but when you are referring to an element from a specific tribe, you should be careful not to assume that it can be applied wholesale to all Native American cultures. Native American culture is heterogenous and diverse!
