Astro-LOA Flash: Mercury, Venus and Pluto are forming a YOD pattern, otherwise known as the finger of God.This is your opportunity to find healthy and creative ways for these energies to express: Mercury wants to share information, Venus wants to attract and Pluto wants to transform. Chance meetings are not going to be pedestrian this week! Eyes open!
The yod is the name for an astrological aspect between three (or more) plants or points where two planets are sextile and both inconjunct to a third.
Let’s break that sentence down so we’re all on the same page. Start with the the word planets. In astrology a ‘planet’ refers to our solar system bodies including the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These are not all considered ‘planets’ in astronomy, but in astrology, they are.
Points are not planets but important parts of the astrological picture and include the ascendant or rising sign, the lunar nodes, the part of fortune, the vertex and the midheaven. Don’t worry if those terms don’t all make sense. For now trust that there are non-planet components of the astrological chart that have meaning.
Aspects, and there are a boat load of them, are the angular relationship in degrees between two planets, or a planet and a point or two points. As I said, there are quite a few aspects or angles that ‘count’ but the basic ones are easy to grasp because they represent common geometrical shapes. Let me give some examples and this will make a lot more sense.
Below are two diagrams that show us an angular relationship between a few different planets. At any given time in the sky, the planets are a certain number of degrees apart from each other. If they happen to be the number of degree considered as an ‘aspect’ then we say they are ‘in aspect to each other.’
The easiest way to get this is to think of the new moon and the full moon. When the moon is new, it is in the same degree as the sun (they are 0 degrees apart). This 0 degree apart relationship is called a ‘conjunction‘. We say, the moon and sun are conjunct.
When the moon is full, the sun and moon are opposite each other, or 180 degrees apart. We call this, logically, an opposition aspect. We say the moon is opposite the sun.
Aspects in the Astrological Chart Include:
0 Degrees Parallel 18 Degrees 30 Degrees 33 Degrees 36 Degrees 40 Degrees 45 Degrees 51 Degrees 60 Degrees 72 Degrees 90 Degrees 103 Degrees 108 Degrees 120 Degrees135 Degrees144 Degree 150 Degrees 154 Degrees 180 Degrees
When planets group together in various aspects, we call those aspect patterns. They can include things like the grand cross, the T-square, the kite, the grand trine and many more.
The top diagrams shows the aspect pattern of the Yod. The symbols you see represent a few of the planets. The RED lines represent the inconjunct (150 degree apart aspect) and the green line represents the sextile (60 degree apart aspect). If in your natal chart you have two (or more in this case) planets 60 degrees apart AND 150 degrees to a singular third planet, bingo, you have a YOD, just like we have in the sky right now between Mercury sextile Venus both inconjunct Pluto.
Remember, there are a lot of other chart patterns every bit as exciting as the Yod. For example the grand trine, which is three planets in the trine aspect of 120 degrees, (green lines) or the kite as seen below.

What does the YOD mean? ANY aspect between two or more planets means they are scripted to dialog with each other. They are connected so that if one is active and ‘doing something’ the connected one wakes up to. They are partners, of sorts.
Think of the YOD aspect pattern as ‘table legs’. Pick up one let of a table and what happens? All the others come up too. Let’s say you have Mercury sextile Venus and they are both inconjunct Pluto. As we just learned, that’s a Yod. If you ‘do’ Mercury (write, speak, communicate, connect) you will automatically activated the other two planets. If Mercury is the point or ‘finger’ of the yod (why they call it the finger of fate or God) then it is up to Mercury to process and express the synthesized energy of the other two. In the sky right now it is Pluto who is the point so the energy is processed through the god of the underworld!
How it works:
Let’s say you’re on a date and Mercury is talking, connecting and asking questions and having a great time on an intellectual level but sensual Venus, well, insert that song Elvis did ‘a little less conversation; a little more action’. . . Venus can turn the chit chat into innuendo and flirt, sometimes over the top ways. (perfectly fine for the date; awkward for board meetings. Mercury’s got to keep Venus steady so the dialog will probably turn to art, food, beauty and film. While that’s going on, intense and potent Pluto is waking up and suddenly the mood shifts, things can turn erotic, transformational, taboo. They can then start arguing (the planets) about who gets to express! It’s a big job for the pointer planet to handle it all. In this case, Pluto wants to create change or at the least express deep unconscious emotions.
To sum it up, the Yod means that three or more of your planets are in dialog with each other and it’s up to the pointing planet to harmonize the energy. It’s called the finger of fate or God because for most people this is a default. Wherever it sits in the chart, (the houses or areas of life are activated) describes where a pattern of behavior or external events occur. It’s not ‘fate’ as in immutable. It’s the default. You can change or adjust it, with awareness. You always have a choice.
Check your chart for this pattern and also look where the Mercury, Venus, Pluto Yod is expressing in your chart. Interesting? Comments welcome!
I find this all very interesting. I am curious as to how Pluto will bring change in my world
Glad you like! Check out where Pluto is transiting in your chart right now (in which house do you find 8 degrees of Capricorn). That will give you some hints.
Thanks Kim. I learn so much from your Blog. I have Pluto in my 3rd house. I get a little confused and I guess pluto will effect or light up an area of my life. So for the 3rd house it says, teaching, learning, writing, talking and connecting… so I guess bottomline is communication. I have mercury in my 10th house. So with Pluto starting things up will my communication I assume this will related to my career (10th house and since that is very tense right now) and Venus is in my 8th house. sex, endings, taxes, shared resources and trust.. Can you give me a snippet of what I might be dealing with? Communication obviously but … This is where I wish I could understand things better. Thank you again!!
Kim, does Astro.com provide the link for a YOD in our charts? Trying to work through this connection.. LOL!!
You already did it! Connections between career and shared resources/projects (sextile from 10th to 8th) require empowered communication on your part (Pluto transiting 3rd and being to focal point of the energy)!
You speaking up is going to transform everything!
I don’t think astro.com finds chart patterns for you but this is a visual for you to practice spotting. Look for sextiles, two planets 60 degrees apart. When you find two planets in sextile, find their midpoint sign. So as it is this week, Mercury is in Leo sextile (60 degrees or 2 signs) Venus in Gemini. The sign between Gemini is Cancer. That’s the midpoint. Now look 180 degrees to to opposite sign (in a circle) to Cancer. What is that? Capricorn. There is Pluto on the exact point 8 degrees. Go through your chart and look at every planet’s aspect.
You learn more by finding the connections visually yourself than getting the computer to print out patterns. Link me your chart and I’ll help you!
Perfect. Thank you!!
Thanks Kim. Yes, right on target with what I have been doing since November. I look forward to seeing where it takes me! Honestly, a much better job situation to improve my health! Praying!
Thats fascinating Kim, thanks so much…. I checked my chart and I think I might have a Yod – Sun 3 degrees Virgo in the 9th, Mars 4 degrees Scorpio on the 11th, then Chiron 1 degree Pisces in the 4th. So the finger is pointing to Chiron, the wounded healer, in the 4th house which is my home and family. My wound and healing in the home, activated by the sun, in the spotlight, and mars, powerful and agressive. No wonder my three teenagers give me so much angst, lol
Well deduced, Jenni. Chiron is also our audacity to create change and adventure. It’s a ‘break out of the mold’ symbol so you may well be changing old family patterns passed down for centuries!
It is not Yod at all Jenni. If Your Chiron was at 3 degree Aquarius than it was a Yod…What your marks as a yod is opposition…
You’re right. I wasn’t reading that carefully. Mars is trine Chiron and Sun is opposite Chiron. Slow down Kim!
Thanks Milanka!
ahhhh, I see…. thank you
so if mercury is in 3rd and venus is in 12th, the conflict between getting caught up in details, small talk, (or maybe overintellectualizing?) and the secret need for deep mystical oneness with the beloved (hmmm, desire for telepathy, no talking whatsoever!) is resolved thru pluto on the cusp of the 8th… tantric sex?? does this sound right? and why oh why will i be far away from him at a family reunion of all places?!
This sounds absolutely right to me. At least, it’s one way the symbols could be expressed.
Good luck with the family reunion. Maybe there will be a chance to feel deep compassion (12th) for siblings and cousins (3rd) via pooling energy (8th) like cleaning up in the kitchen or maybe playing with the tarot deck together!
the way it played out was very interesting, actually. the conflicting desire to keep my impending divorce secret and the reality of tons of communications with cousins and relatives (which i dread, having natal mercury in 12th and saturn in 3rd) was resolved by a conversation about the future with my grandfather who offered to support me so i can return to school. thank you 8th house other people’s money. and thank you deep, transformational pluto yod! and thank you kim.
Mercury wanting to share information, tick 5th house creative expression, Venus wanting to attract, tick 3rd house, teaching, learning, writing, talking, communicating( open arms to all those themes) and the focal point Pluto wanting to transform, 10th house career, mission, pluto all of a sudden you are swirling up my consciousness.
Looking thru my chart for yod patterns has been a great exercise, I haven’t seen my recorded birth time but reasonably confident of the time given to me within half hour, only three house changes (same sign) which ever way I look at it. The yod in my chart takes in those three planets and houses!!!! either way (now it’s got me thinking, what time, what is this cosmic puzzle) so I have Neptune in 10th or 9th 13.18, Pluto in 8th or seventh 9.24 and Jupiter in 3rd or 2nd 9.46. Even if I never know for sure i am sure in due time life will reflect the answer to me.
Great post Kim, breaking things down can be so good, and I really enjoyed Virgo Eliies posts as sharing the ten, third house themes.
Love the way you express the Mercury, Venus, Pluto. Thank you for that. And yes, even if you don’t know the exact time for sure, life does reflect the answers. The map is full of valuable information regardless!
This Yod has me intrigued! Pluto is currently within a degree of my 11th House North Node, and Mercury and Venus are Opposite and Trine my AC.
I’m very interested to see how this manifests!
Oh Keep us posted! I am very interested in outer planet transits to the Node (I will have Pluto over NN in another year or so in opposite house, 5th,) Is that your mean node or true, or are they, as in some cases, the same?
It’s my True Node, though my Mean is a degree different.
I’ve been fascinated by the Nodes since I first heard about them, and this Pluto transit (and Uranus square) have me wanting to really dig in and learn more.
I’ll let you know if anything interesting develops!
I am looking forward to what is going to transpire. I checked my chart again since I question my understanding of astrology / astronomy and I am still on target. I know you would tell me otherwise. Just pinning down the understanding of a Yod helps.
Thanks Kim!
