Your own beliefs are actually the most powerful forces that influence your existence. - Harry Palmer, founder of Avatar
- Mercury and Paris by Creti Donato 1745
With Mercury, the planet representing thoughts and the conscious mind (what you think and what you think you think) in retrograde motion, now is the right time to talk about the difference between thoughts, beliefs, feelings and emotions, and their role in deliberate creation. Here are a few definitions to get us started:
Thoughts are the product of mental activity in the prefrontal region of the brain. That which we think (are aware of).
Belief is the mental act of acceptance or conviction that a thought is true or ‘real.’ To have confidence in something or someone. ‘A belief is a thought we keep thinking.’ Abe-Hicks
Feeling is sensation involving perception by touch. Any affective state of consciousness such as that resulting from emotions, sentiments or desires. An emotional state.
Emotion is any strong feeling, joy, sorrow, reverence, hate or love, rising subjectively rather than through conscious mental effort. Emotions originate as nerve impulses, which also trigger neurochemical events. The limbic system, not the prefrontal region, interprets events to generate emotions.
Thoughts, beliefs, feelings and emotions are all energy and that energy is
‘registered’ consciously in a particular order. Brain research has shown that emotion precedes thought. We experience anger physically before we can register we are angry. In this model we can only make conscious choices when strong emotions do not dominate the system. The Avatar approach to reality states that beliefs precede experience (which generates feelings and emotions).
The order might go like this:
1) I believe a person will be aggressive.
2) I unconsciously experience the person as aggressive.
3) I have a feeling of anger that swells into emotion.
4) I consciously register the anger and react.
The key factor here that triggers everything is the belief.
Beliefs, feelings, emotions and thoughts are energy, all vibrating at a particular frequency and they attract to themselves a ‘like’ vibration. But we have different levels of conscious control over each one. Take emotions for example. Paul Ekman, a psychologist researching emotions, says, ‘I do not choose to have an emotion, to be angry, happy, scared, excited. I am suddenly angry, happy, scared, excited.
How do we break this chain of events that seem out of our control?
Awareness.
Where is the easiest place to put our present conscious awareness?
On our beliefs.
(Beliefs) determine what you perceive and how you perceive it; they influence your thoughts, your expectations, and your actions. They shape your personality. They even effect the outcome of your actions and the way that others perceive you and respond to you. -Harry Palmer
It’s easy to test the relationship between beliefs and our experience of ‘reality’.
1) List off three things you believe about work and three about relationship.
2) Describe how you experience work and relationship. See a connection?
Where does astrology fit in? Remember, astrology is LOA in action. We aren’t the way we are because of our birth data. Turn it around. We are born at a particular time because of who we are. We don’t come here with a clean slate. We come in with core values, beliefs, likes and dislikes as seen in our planets, aspects and signs. We are born when we are (the sun, moon, and planets in a certain place) because it’s a perfect match to us!
To explore this astrologically, look at the tenth house in your chart and check out the beliefs you might be holding, conscious or unconscious (as represented by the signs, planets and aspects) around career. Or, look at the 7th house and see what you have ‘brought with you’ about committed relationships. If you have Saturn in either house, career/commitment will be very important to you and it also may, at first, bring up fears of failure and unworthiness. By studying your chart, you can get a clearer understanding of the beliefs and thoughts that are attracting your reality. Yes, attracting. Reality is an externalization of consciousness and what you think about a lot, (what you believe) is the strongest focus you have, a force of creation.
Isabel Hickey, in Astrology – A Cosmic Science 1970 – puts it like this: How are you thinking today? That is going to have everything to do with your today as well as your tomorrow.
Said in another way: Life follows your thoughts – and you can tell your future based on what you’re thinking now. – Jeannette Maw
Jeannette goes on to lists ways to put more awareness on unconscious thoughts and beliefs, pointing out that the sure and simple way to change a neural-pathway (belief) is to ‘overwrite it’ with a new thought.
Things you can do:
- identify your limiting beliefs
- get at the ones deeply buried in your subconscious
- check for payoffs from existing beliefs
- understanding where your beliefs originated
- recognizing the role emotions play in keeping beliefs in place.
- Explore your astrology to understand the nature of your beliefs and how to turn them into creative expressions that serve you
- Jeannette‘s simple take on how to change a belief: practice the new thought. It works. It’s that uncomplicated!Just pick the new thought that represents the belief you want, and invest some time in it. The more you think it, the more you build that neural pathway in your brain, the more natural it becomes to entertain it, and pretty soon, with enough repetition, you’ve got a new belief on board.

Hi Kim.. Thank you for this. I thought it very informative and helpful. Never really took the time to understand my reactions to certain things and how they might perpetuate into something negative. I took recent events and based on your steps realized that what I was thinking led to the outcome which in one case was negative. I liked this exercise since I am trying so hard to understand what is going on in my life regarding career and relationships.. as I have posted before.
Hi Virgo Ellie,
Glad the post and step are bringing some realizations! Often just setting the intention to gain insights is enough to bring all kinds of ‘ah ha’ moments. I think that’s happening!
I agree Virgo Ellie, Kim you really are a fabulous teacher. I very much enjoyed reading this today, as it resonated with the things that have been going on in my head of late. But I was already on a mission to be getting things done rather than worrying about things not being done, so couldn’t take the time to go through it properly. I’m looking forward to saving it somewhere as a resource to go back to in my less proactive moments.
Thank you so much for all that you give xxo
Thanks Shell. That makes my day. And yes, the beauty of the internet. The post will always be here to revisit! Thanks for dropping in.
I really liked to the sentence that we are born at a particular time because of who we are. Thanks!
To take Mr. Ekman a step further, yes, I do not choose to experience an emotion, but I do choose the one’s I focus on.
Consider not replacing old beliefs with new ones. Since beliefs seem like filters they separate me from reality. I want to experience what is real: the upwelling divinity. So when the emotions, associated with filters come up I try to let them go so I can focus more on the emotions associated with spirt.
For instance, say a belief comes up that I don’t have enough money. I could create a new belief of abundance. Or since spirit is constantly offering abundance, I can focus on spirit’s offering to me right now. And since spirit is smarter than me….
In other words, it seems like filters are a creation of ego.
Hi Jeff, Thank you for these insights. You’re really added to the topic. To let go of beliefs (value judgments) and NOT replace them with another is letting go of ego creations. A sure sign of enlightenment is worry less, judge less, experience more and I would say, SEE more. Glad you stopped by!
My, my Kim, boy this post could not have come at a better time for me. Thank you so very much!
So, I have been questioning and challenging my thoughts and beliefs lately. I find it so empowering to know that as much as a thought may feel absolute, the reality is it is not. Hurrah!!
But, I am having a difficult time blending the astro part into this. For example, I am in the most wonderful committed relationship at the moment. We would like nothing more to share a home someday, however there is a geographic distance between us right now. We both cannot pick up and move one way or the other due to family and work. How might the fact that I have Saturn in my fourth house be interpreted in a most positive way? Am I looking at “what is” too much?
Xo Michelle
Good question, Michelle. Where Saturn is we do tend to see what we are expected to see, at first. Saturn in the fourth might think that it’s ‘hard’ to have the home life you really want. When younger, we ‘defer’ to an authority outside ourselves. What Saturn really has to offer is individuation. An experience of self-direction, strong boundaries (around family expectations for example) and empowerment.
Saturn’s gold is strength to create the family you want, not the one others expect you to participate in. It’s a drive to become your own authority. Does that make sense?
Just read this and thank you from my heart. Just want I needed at this time. xo
Oh wonderful, Cate. With my second Saturn Ret in 3rd, it’s the perfect time for me to have a reread too! xxx
