Medusa and Eros are conjunct @ 3-4 Scorpio this week. Astro-LOA Flash: Eros and Medusa square the Sun bring high levels of passion and power. Anything getting in the way of what you want is a target but maybe put down your spear and rethink the situation. What we resist persists. What we fight against persists. The sooner you get okay with everything, the sooner you achieve your goals. Seriously.
Asteroid 149 Medusa is a “Main Belt” asteroid, taking 3.21 years to orbit the sun. She is a tiny body, only 19km in diameter yet her symbolic impact may be anything but small. Those with planets or points at 0-6 Scorpio or the early degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) may get some real insights into the depths of their unconscious through the rich imagery of Medusa and Eros.
Medusa, which means “cunning one” was the mortal sister to Stheno “strong” and Euryale “wide roaming”. All were daughters of the sea titans Porcys and Ceto. Medusa was the youngest of the girls, extremely wise and most beautiful—she had particularly striking hair. Men found her enchanting and came to ask her ‘favor’ but she was devoted to her service as priestess to Athena and ignored them.
One who would not be ignored was Poseidon, god of the sea and rival to Athena for the domain of Athens. He raped Medusa (some versions say she was willing) in Athena’s temple and for the offense, Athena punishes the girl. She transformed her, and her sisters, into beasts with dragon wings, scaly skin and snakes for hair. Whoever looked upon these gorgons was instantly turned to stone.
The young man Perseus, with the help of Mercury, Pluto and Athena, slew Medusa by severing her head. He avoided looking at her directly by using Athena’s shield as a mirror to see the sleeping gorgon without being turned to stone.
From the blood of Medusa was born the magnificent winged horse, Pegasus and from her severed neck came the giant, Khrysaor. Paradoxically, her blood held both venomous and healing powers. Medusa’s head was eventually placed on Athena’s shield where it continued to turn men into stone if they glanced upon it. Medusa became a symbol not for devotion and beauty but for fear, hatred and onslaught.
This myth says something very profound about the sacred feminine. Certainly, Medusa embodies the outrage of subjugated women over millenniums of time. She is raped, angry and poisonous with a stare of fixed rage. Any man who sees the “gorgon” in a woman is instantly turned to stone (petrified–immobilized). Barrett L. Dorko, P.T. writes in his paper, Perseus’ Shield:
“The meaning of the Medusa myth is clear. To directly face an event that is full of fear and powerful emotion is most likely to produce the immobility, the “turning to stone” that the trauma originally created. Better to approach the memory obliquely, symbolically, gently and with our “shield” of understanding held high.”
Jung speaks of the symbolism of the mirror as the capacity to “see” aspects of the unconscious that otherwise would render us immobile.
Only through the unconscious can such a view (which often shocks and upsets the conscious mind) be obtained–just as in the Greek myth of the Gorgon Medusa, whose look turned men to stone, could be gazed upon only in a mirror.
Alicia Le Van in her paper on Women in Antiquity reminds us that Athena has roots in the Libyan Amazon Serpent-Goddess-Trinity. In pre-Hellenic myths Athena was said to have come from the uterus of Lake Tritonis, (meaning Three Queens), the same place that Medusa is said to have ruled, hunted and led troops in Athenian myth. The older myths are more specific, they say that Athene was born of the Three Queens of Libya themselves, the Triple Goddess, with Metis-Medusa as her destroyer aspect.
Although Athena’s image is altered and “civilized” by the Greeks and their patriarchal rule, in art she is consistently associated with snakes as they appear on her shoulders and on her armor, along with Medusa’s face as the central image. Le Van suggests the the entire Medusa myth was used to explain the appearance of Medusa’s head on Athene’s shield and that the decapitation of the gorgon is in essence the truncation of the sacred feminine.
“The Perseus myth was invented to explain the appearance of Gorgon Medusa’s face, or mask, on Athena’s shield and aegis, the image of Athena that was inherited from the pre-Hellenic period.”
She also states that the demise of outraged Medusa is the definitive subjugation of women:
“The mythological beheading of Medusa symbolizes the ultimate silencing of female wisdom and expression. It is the act which stops her growth, limits her potential movement and cultural contributions. She is obliterated and her severed head is flaunted on the Acropolis and other works of art in pride of her and all women’s subjugation by violent men. She is broken and her body enslaved. Her spirit, her mind, her spiritual powers are killed. Her once honored forces of female creativity and destruction are halted. Her role as dynamic mediatrix degraded. Her life-giving, death-wielding powers and wild forces of nature are controlled, tamed, and mastered by the male order. The cycles of life and nature are made to conform to his linear perspective.”
Le Van also links Medusa’s blood to menstruation.
“The snakes, her dreaded face, her look of stone, and her magical blood all correlate with the ancient menstrual taboo. Primitive folk believed that the look of a menstruating woman could turn a man to stone. Menstrual blood was also thought to be the source of all mortal life and also of death, as the two are inseparable.”
In yet another approach to Medusa, Maureen B. Roberts, PhD states in her exploration Embracing the Fragmented Self: Shamanic Explorations of the Sacred in Schizophrenia & Soul Loss:
“As a second parameter in the assessment of the overriding effect of pathology, placing woundedness in its mythic context, it’s worth bearing in mind, for instance, that Osiris and Dionysus were dismembered, that Psyche had to journey to the Underworld, that Prometheus had his liver repeatedly torn out by Zeus’s eagle, and that Medusa was beheaded. As well, in terms of the psyche’s ultimate goal of attaining wholeness, ‘centredness’ and integration, fragmentation is a blow to the hubris of the stable ego, which must relinquish its sense of a fixed identity and must eventually step aside in order to allow the paradoxical Self to displace it as the centre of consciousness.”
With such rich imagery and connotation in mind, what might it portend, the cojunction of Eros and Medusa?
Medusa is no stranger to erotic relationship. She surfaces with her extreme counter-part, the “Ice Man” where she expresses severe rage against the wall of rational detachment. Read this wonderful and humorous summary, adapted from Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo’s lectures on “The Ice-man and the Medusa” at Dr. Z’s site. Click here for “Getting a Clue”
It is possible that Eros may bring love to Medusa’s outraged heart. It is also possible that Medusa will extricate Eros from a trapped or contained situation, bringing previously repressed material up from the depths of the unconscious. Where the Sacred feminine is repressed, love (Eros) cannot flourish. It may be the outrage of MEDUSA that blows open areas in our life where patriarchal ignorance (to ignore!) by both men and women has taken over.
Eros had the power to touch the gods and mortals, monsters and daemons alike. Sometimes it’s as easy as letting go of your old story! Note where 3-4 degrees of Scorpio falls in your natal chart and feel free to comment!

Medusa/Eros in my 3rd, conjunct Uranus, square 1st house Leo Mars (and Asc/Saturn)
To be honest I think if I decided to let some outage at patriarchy/ignorance/being ignored loose on that little aspect it may not turn out that well.
I’m more aiming for dignity at present.
Love the strength of detail in this post Kim. The power and usages of mythology is endlessly fascinating.
Thanks, Shell. It is fascinating. I know the undercurrents with Ur sq Ma/Asc/Sa can feel highly explosive! One way I let that kind of energy out is to write it into my characters. Art is a very creative realm for this kind of expression!
Yes, the mythological links are so enlightening. I love how ancient stories support contemporary feelings!
Yes, I imagine channelling that stuff into your characters would be pretty effective. My creative outlets are not quite so suited to that function. Cranking the stereo helps though.
Definitely cranking the stereo!
Thanks Kim. . .Medusa has a close and personal affect. . exact my Moon (8th!!). . .so her unconscious memories run deep in my Ancestory. .. . this current visit activates Mars, the Nodes and Venus, closely. . .so I’ll be watching for her presence around me and within me (6th). . ..thanks for that. . .she is someone I have tended to consciously ignore (ouch!!!) buried there in the past and deep in the psyche. . .that’s like trying to stop the sea from crashing on the shore.. . . .so many thanks for the reminder. . .and all your wonderful input. . .. . Gratitude is the flavour of the time for me at present. . . .so will be looking closely at Medusa today. . .and the gifts she brings. . .many. .. .the old Wise Woman Herbs and Magick. . . .ahhh and I am just completing my Flower Essence briefs on my website. . . .she’s a wonderful companion when acknowledged. . . .another word that keeps arising lately. . . much love marilynxxx
Marilyn, what a perfect time to be doing Flower Essences on your website. Post us the link please!
Thanks for commenting. Medusa/Moon in 8th is so potent!
Hi Kim. . ..thanks. . .The Deva-Line Flower Essences briefs are all up now. . .on Deva-line page at http://www.magickloveandhealing.com. . . .also realized I have Medea on my Moon. . .not Medusa. .. . often mix them up!!! Medusa’s on Descendant. . .interesting, as I was updating the Essence briefs I felt like I was absorbing them all. . .became a bit overwhelming.. .. thanks again Kim. .for all your great work. . .and sharing. . .xxxx (what did happen on that day thou. . .25th. . .was my energies were being powerfully pulled on. . .friends in need, a lot of intense energy. . . .was extremely exhausting. . . .) xx
Love the post Kim. It’s been a while since I visited the Medusa myth. I had forgotten that I have her conjunct my NN along with Ishtar and Aphrodite
Reading this I feel enraged (thanks Medusa placement!) due to the truncation of the sacred feminine and the victimisation taking place not only by patriarchal influences but by Athena herself. Whenever I read it I blamed Athena for her ghastly behaviour, however I now see that as a patriarchal trap – pitting one woman against another to keep the status quo. Medusa/Eros is currently in the last part of my 11th.
Thank you for posting this,TheEmpress! You show beautifully the process of pivoting away from rage and blame to a more enlightened understanding. Well said!
That is brilliant, I also think about how in the pitting one woman against another is the other layer to the story where women respond unconsciously to that with the belief (fostered by a patriarchal society) their is “not enough” and sadly this has often being the case
Putting awareness on that feeling of lack and noticing where there IS enough, like, there is enough air to breathe for starters, can turn around old limiting beliefs! Thanks for that Melissa.
Thank you Kim. Really enjoy reading your post on astro/mythology a lot. My mc is 0,58 degree in Scorpio and I have been dealing with the issues above in a most profound and professional way. I was wondering how this strategic Athena energy originally portrait sexuality as the Greek have unsexed her quite a bit and the turning to stone of men prohibited any intimate relationship with them.
Again thanks for your wonderful blog. Enjoy it very much.
Good questions, Blanka. Athena represents an aspect of the sacred feminine, but you’re right, her sexuality isn’t part of it, at least in the more recent imatges. She does love though, as reinforced by Apollodorus:
Ah, would that flashing-eyed Athena might choose to love thee even as then she cared exceedingly for glorious Odysseus [220] in the land of the Trojans, where we Achaeans suffered woes. For never yet have I seen the gods so manifestly shewing love, as Pallas Athena did to him, standing manifest by his side. If she would be pleased to love thee in such wise and would care for thee at heart, then would many a one of them utterly forget marriage. –Apollodorus
I’ve an older article on Athena and Eros here: http://www.falconastrology.com/erosca06.html#sed
As for her earlier portrayals, some scholars place Athena’s origins with the Libyan deity Neith, goddess of war, wisdom and hunting. There are a lot of similarities with Athena, but Neith is also a creation deity. “All that she conceived in her heart comes into being including the thirty gods.” Having no known husband she has been described as “Virgin Mother Goddess.” We know in Greek Mythos that the ‘virgin goddesses’ were not asexual. They often bore many children, but they were ‘intact’ or self-contained. They did not need a husband to ground their identity. Virgin in this sense meant ‘individuated’.
Athena’s birth (one version), full grown from her father’s head, separates her from the creative act, from ‘mother’ and the feminine but she was still the product of Zeus and Metis (before Zeus swallowed her whole). There are other stories of her origins. Definitely worth researching!
Thanks Kim. Come to think of it I have Pallas conjunct Uranus at 3 degrees in Virgo (conj. Pluto at 10 degrees) in the 8th House (and mars there 25 degrees). And I always wonder about Paris Judgement…his choice between the three goddesses Aphrodite, Hera and Pallas….so all three must in a symbolic way be equally ‘relating’ to a man….in different ways…yet relating. Say: lover, wife..and.~? friend? buddy? soulmate?. And both Aphrodite and Hera have a sexual relationship….the male/female theme of choosing/rewarding is pretty explicit so I do not see why Pallas should be excluded. I think we have a void in understanding a lost sexual ‘relatedness’ now only focussing on the mental aspect of the relationship.
Also the theme of being your own woman and re-inventing an intimate equal relationship with men has of course been the focus of the second feminist wave….the Pallas/Uranus conjunction?
I better stop here…once this pattern unfolds…..;-)
Thanks again (a lot) for your wonderful inspiration, just getting into this sheds such bright light on my personal themes.
Will be back here soon.
ps. coming back from the kitchen to check my writing before posting I realized I have a calendar full of owls watching over me when I cook. Astrology is such fun
Wish you the best.
I love the choice of Paris and what it represents, though I’ve always thought more about the ‘uninvited guest’ aspect, the exclusion of Eris! https://kimfalconer.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/the-uninvited-guest/
Oh and those owls! That’s excellent!;)
Thanks for this fascinating read Kim, I love learning about the myths in this way.
3 degrees Scorpio squares my I.C in Leo and therefore my M.C in Aquarius, which is also the degree of the Chiron of my “love interest”. As today is also my “second” Venus return this year (i.e due to the Venus retrograde), and the Eros/Meusa conjunction is also trining my Mars in Cancer, I am intrigued to see how this may play out!
Have definitely been letting go of some old, negative family stuff and also experiencing a feeling of being trapped by circumstances beyond my control….will be looking out for signs over next couple of days! x
Hi Moira! This is more significant for you being part of your 2nd Venus return. Hang on, do you mean your 3rd and final Venus return for the year? If your Ve is 19 Gemini, you had your first about April 29, second May 31 and today is the third, the chart that will ‘last’ until next year when Venus is again at 19 Gemini.
If so, that means you have the Eros/Medusa dynamic for the next 12 months. As you say, this is very supportive for releasing old, out lived memories and experiences. Think clean sweep!
Hello Kim, thanks for that – yes I DO mean my third Venus return..am now slightly scared! Since posting the above I also checked my natal placement for Medusa and Psyche – both are 26 degrees Cancer, and my sun is conjunct at 20 degrees. Does this mean the Medusa/Psyche energy and issues are at the forefront of my life experience this time around – i.e throughout my life? Not sure how to interpret this, but it seems significant.
After being on my own for 10 years since the death of my partner, I really would just love to be with the person who is the “Eros” in my personal Psyche/Eros story (in fact, his Eros actually conjunct HIS sun, trining my sun/Psyche). Without over-romanticising, it almost seems like we are living out a version of those roles. I was stunned to discover those placements in our charts. I’m hoping for a similar happy conclusion to the real Eros and Psyche. It’s been a long old haul. xx
Asteroids conjunct the sun tend to be experienced as attributes along the journey. Empowering energy. There is a LOT of intuition and strength there!
Love how you have Sun/Psyche and he has Sun/Eros. The trine is very much like living out the myth at times. Sounds like it’s time for that happy conclusion to me!
When I was 18(and 18 years ago) I can think of 2 significant events that defined that time. One was getting my license and the other a tattoo of medusa. For me Medusa will always signify rite of passage & conscious choice of path.
The link you to Alicia Le Van’s paper is brilliant. Her “reflecting a culture in harmony with nature” makes me beam. This post gives me so much to move forward with as I had been a little stuck on looking at the subjugation of woman in history, with flow on to today from from a LOA view point. The analogy of putting down the spear sits so well as the truth of the sovereign female wisdom together with rich lines of awareness from the women who walked before us has afforded us the ability to live by our authentic nature, and here we are with Eros and medusa side by side, what will be the story there? Personally Medusa and Eros are transiting 8th house in scorp exact on my natal uranus and eternal transformation resonates completely. Also I realised I used to look at my natal placement of Medusa as being sandwiched between my Saturn and Mars. I am telling a different story with that now. May our new myths and stories be a beacon of illumination for all sentient beings. Thanx Kim
So well put, Melissa. And yes, telling a different story changes everything! Love how your tattoo of Medusa is a talisman for empowerment!
Thanks for your input here!
ps. maybe slightly of topic but for all interested in Pallas Athena’s placement in the radix…here is a fun article why this placement is so special for astrologers:
http://oxford-astrologer.blogspot.nl/2011/04/why-pallas-athene-is-astrologers.html
Enjoy!
Love the article. My Palla Athene is 29 Leo 18. My Ascendant is 29 Leo 55
haha like it wouldn’t show in that majestic picture of you with a sword on the beach, a very clear introduction to Kim Falconer. Great!
Thank you for your positive vibes Kim, I needed that! I will be pondering on Medusa and her meaning, but for now I feel key words are endurance, strength and transformation.
You know, I drew an angel card this morning and came up with “Answered Prayer” – i.e, answers will come via, amongst other things, people acting as earth angels – I think that’s you today, bless you! I appreciate it xx
Thank you, Moira. I am so softened to think I might for a moment align with an angel card. That just makes me happy. MWAHS
Wauu…My medusa is at my natal Venus conjunct mercuriius in 4th house, square my Ascendent at 3 degree leo and square my Jupiter in Aquarius…My friend has his Sun and moon in Leo vartex at 5 degree Shorpio, and Lilith at 2 degree Aquarius…What a mess…
ps my natal medusa is in conjunction with my Eros and moon midpoint in 6 th in Capricorn …where my progressed Sun mars and Venus are now…
