Icarus by Damon Deny
Astro-LOA Flash: Asteroid 1566 Icarus conjunct Pluto in Capricorn for the third time this year (see ephemeris below) harkens back to January and August 2012. This can manifest as a full realization of what you’ve been tolerating. (what holds you back) If you feel limited or restricted, watch the next few days for a creative ‘way out’. The impulse is to ‘fly free’ so let your spirit soar. Check decisions made in Jan/Aug. Where did they lead? Now YOU decide what’s next!
Icarus was Daedalus’s boy who, ignoring his father’s practical warning not to fly too close to the sun, lost his feathered wings, fell to the sea and drowned. Not a very successful outcome though he did escape the prison tower they’d been stuck in. Some people associate Icarus with a kind of crash and burn mentality. Not me. I see it as freedom. Expansion. Liberation!
True, this asteroid can represent some extreme measures, feelings and insights but mainly it represents an attempt to escape intolerable situations. It is the impulse to get out of unfair situations or go for liberating goals that others might say are impossible. Note: It doesn’t have to always end ‘badly’.
Icarus set free can be vivid inspiration. Trapped and he is like a wild bird caged. Ever had that feeling? It’s like an instinctual urge to run like hell when all they’ve said is, sign here, or pick you up at 7, or maybe I do . . .
Icarus with Pluto is a chance to gain a deeper insight on the ‘flight’ side or our fight or flight response. Where do you feel like flying the coop? Is it fear or instinct or healthy self-awareness? Take a moment to think about it today and eliminate a toleration or too. Why? Because tolerating something is not always a virtue. It can be a heavy energy drain. Ha… how interesting – ive always liked the story of Icarus as a Gem with sagg moon, I often feel the need to just fly – and i do – its very cathartic. However I haven’t looked at Icarus before. I just did and I have it is Pisces in the 11th house all on its on. I looked up the meaning of the 11th house and i find it confusing or hard to describe… ‘the house of hopes and dreams’? Does the Pisces part mean anything? So what would be the meaning of this… to strive for me dreams? Or abolish my fears?

Think of the 11th house as your relationships, not one-to-one but one-to-many! The group! The like-minded others! The network of connections, friends and associates that hold sacred our goals and dreams for the future. This is where we become more because we merge our energy with the group. . .
Icarus here might be a safe guard that keeps your from hanging with the ‘wrong-for-you’ crowd. And yes, striving for YOUR dreams. Not other people’s ideas of what should be your dreams~!

I have my Icarus exact on my Vertex and midpoint son and moon…It is also on a descendant of my boyfriend…
I’m interested in that Vertex contact! Do you find that change is swift and definitive . . . no going back?

My Icarus is at 26 Sag/ 5 degrees from my Saturn in the 2nd AND exactly conjunct my Prog ASC! My Draconic Icarus is at 3 Gemkni Conjunct Natal Mars and Square Natal Pluto- inconjunct Natal Neptune in Scorpio. The day I looked this up, I realized that my mum had used Paragoric an opiate to mZnagd my behavior when I was younger- and that whenever I got too “frisky” creative energetic that she encouraged me to drink alcohol to keep her company when I was older.
Big AHA moments! I started running regularly about 4 years ago- doing mixed martial arts and channeling that escape impulse. Current transit of Icarus at 7 Cap is sextile Jupiter in the 12th in Scorpio.

Hi Kim, just adore your site, so glad I was guided to it because I am learning so much – I’m like a sponge, soaking it all up. My Icarus is in Scorpio in the 7th along with Venus. All my life I’ve been shy/quiet but now I’ve reached mid life I seem to be gaining confidence and wanting to live life to the full. So is my Icarus placing going to help me burst out of my shell even more – loving life at the moment. I’ve always hidden my sexual desires and been quite cold but finally that has come to the surface as well.
Does that mean you are Taurus rising? With Jupiter transiting there, I’m not surprised there is a feeling of awakening!
Icarus is brave, courageous in the face of fears and ready to ‘leap’. For ppl who are ‘over the top’ in that department, he can be reckless but for you I think he is your ally, like your own private cheering section! Sounds exciting!
Funny you should say that. No record of my birth time but my mother thinks it was around 9pm, so thought I was Taurus rising – but learnt astrology for a year or so and astrologer said no way because I was tall and slim, she thought I was more Aries. So she did horary chart based on few relevant times and came up with 7.05 pm and for past 9 years I’ve been assuming I’m Aries rising, even though I don’t really identify with Aries as such. Any thoughts on how I can try again and find the time?

Hi, My husband is late rising and has Mars in Pisces in the 12th. He is 5’5 on a good day- and is thickset now that middle age has hit. He is a red head and hot tempered- but there the resemblance to Aries ends. He does go on rampages LOL and we have lots of chipped crockery
Where is your Venus? That might give some clues. I am Scorpio ASC with Mars in Gemini and I’m slim and lots of nervous energy.Not quiet or brooding unless I’m really mad.LOL!
Maybe you’re a 29 degree Aries person- like my son with 29 Cancer ASC who is by turn quiet then gregarious.

Thanks for that. My ASC is 24 degrees Aries, Mars is in Sag in the 9th and Venus in Scorpio in the 7th. I identify with Taurus in loving food and little luxuries – but then I’m Libran and Librans always like the good things in life. Have made many Taurean long lsting friends in the past few years. I can be quite happy sitting on the couch for hours reading or looking up astrology on the computer, don’t do more than I have to (Taureans can be slow – but then Librans can be lazy too). Then I’ll have a big spurt of energy and go on into the wee hours cleaning or on some new project I’ve been drawn to). I definitely don’t have the Aries temper (my son is an Aries – and he definitely should have red hair, can be very short tempered but then also very loving), and seem to have abundant patience. As you can see I’m definitely showing my Libran trait in seeing both sides to everything and analysing everything and having a Gemini moon means double trouble too, ha ha.
There are Taurus rising people who are ‘tall and thin’, especially if it’s 2.5 – 5 degrees of Taurus which is the Gemini Dwadashamshas. (You can read about this and see the chart/explanation here – http://www.falconastrology.com/astro_compatibility.htm – it’s an article on compatibility but you get the idea of how the division of the signs can carry the flavor of their decan and dwad). 10 – 12.5 Taurus is the Virgo dwad, (always looks so young!) and 17.5 – 20 Taurus is the Sagittarius dwad which can be tall tall tall (and thin) . . . so….
It’s very tricky just going by the archetypal ‘look’ of a rising sign. It’s too general at times. Also you can be Taurus rising with Jupiter on the ascendant and have a decidedly Saggo look (from Jupiter’s ruling sign) . . .
Some people, women in particular, take after their Moon signs esp if the moon is in aspect to the Ascendant or to the ruler of the 6th. I don’t guess at rising signs when the birth time is unknown, at least not by physical traits. I would look to Transits of the outer planets crossing the Ascendant (and watch this year with Jupiter in Taurus. You will feel him over the Asc, (if he hasn’t already been).
Taurus rising or not, you do have those Venus qualities (both Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus).

I have Jupiter 29 Gem 55 and Venus 00 Cancer 5 – my closest conjunction. Not going to elaborate on where I’m over the top! lol

Maybe I’m not reading that emphemeris properly, but I see the second conjunction around 18 Aug, not July, is that right?
If so it lines up with something I am so over tolerating I’m not even going to mention it.
I have Icarus at 19 Aqua, square MC/IC Jupiter and Node conjunction.
Sociologists also talk about tolerations with regard to the power inequities they mask. That is, if one person ‘tolerates’ another it can also be a form of power over them, you are ‘allowing’ them to be.
I only did the ephm every 10 days to save space, which wasn’t so helpful. (I was looking at the semi-sextile! Oi!) Thanks for pointing that out!!!

My Icarus is at 18 Aquarius – 6th House. I have a fondness for Icarus. There’s a thin line between being an asteroid and a comet. The asteroid that takes the leap or is nudged and starts moving becomes a comet. There was a night a while back when I was struggling to fall asleep, so instead of worrying about sleep I let my mind wander, and ended up thinking about being a comet…
This night I dream of a life
when I flew through the jewelled mysteries of dark

Think about the third house. What does it represent? Conscious thoughts? Communication? Connections? What are you ‘tolerating’ there? How can you be more honest (more yourself) in what you say or express?

The asteroids are accents to what is already present. Retro or direct, they activate. I would only look closely at Rx asteroid when it turns on a planet or point (when it stations there). Make sense?

You need to specially add asteroids like that, by scrolling down to the bottom of the Astrodienst page and sticking the asteroid number in the additional objects box. However your chart link allowed me to do that and I saw you’ve got Icarus at 15 Sag, conjunct part of fortune, in your first house.
However it’s not rising, and beyond the sextile to the moon, the other aspects (semi-sextile Mars and inconjunct vertex) don’t scream dominant player in your world.
If I were you I’d start by looking to that packed libra/10th house for my explanations for things, particularly given Saturns been trundling over it all.
Sorry, I wasn’t thinking about the transit point when I wrote that. You’ve got Mars in the 2nd at 13 Cap, so Pluto is beginning to act on that and the Icarus transit would have been running back and forward over it. So thinking about things about how you act out your values, attitudes towards possessions and other 2nd things, and how they may be being transformed. Also, Pluto squaring your libra stuff is worth paying attention to.
I agree, Shell. And Icarus can ‘preheat’ the Pluto contact with Mars. Jennifer, did you get that extra step to add asteroids into the mix?

Ha, I’m totally a ‘in practical terms’ type of person to. However my practicalities aren’t likely to be yours. Plus of course i have no idea what your current contexts are. I suggest you’re the one who needs to think through how the theoretical concepts apply to your practical reality.

Will have something to offer there in 2013! I’ll keep you posted. Shell is talking about transiting Pluto forming a 90 degree ‘square’ to planets and points you have in the sign of Libra. Check my page on aspects here. It explains more.
