The “Mayan Prophecy” thing is based on an erroneous interpretation of a sacred calendar . . . and a weak grasp of both astronomy and astrology.
I wonder if that statement’s going to get me some rotten tomatoes? Things may be happening, but I attribute them to collective beliefs, not for the ‘reasons’ we think. (Join me and Jeannette Maw on Dec 13 for Align with the Stars – Galactic Center Line up)
There is a LOT of talk about December solstice 2012. A lot. Books have been written, and perhaps fortunes made, all on the notion that something cataclysmic or, at a minimum, unique and transcendent, is happening then. It’s linked to one of the Mayan calendars, the Long Count, which measures cycles of four hundred years (in 5,000 year go rounds). Some have misunderstood 2012 to represent the ‘end of the world’, not the end of a four hundred year cycle. Contemporary Mayan priest are baffled by this. They have no beliefs stating the worlds ends, transforms, whatever, this December 21st. As a matter of fact, the Mayan, twelve hundred years ago, made notes (carved into rock) on dates much further into the future, 4772 AD and beyond. If I were going to write about Mayan prophesy, I’d be more interested in exploring why a culture would be marking dates thousands of years into the future, than suggesting something earth shattering, literally, was going to happen at the end of a long count cycle. The Mayans have no knowledge of reference to this notion. <– Maybe read that sentence twice?

Mayan Calendar
Aside form the Mayan culture not predicting more than a once every four hundred year change of cycles, (read more about the real Mayan prophecy here) we don’t line up with the galactic plane on solstice either. That was an event that happened three million years ago and will not happen again for another thirty million years. With the orbit of our galaxy, we’re talking LONG cycles.
What does happen this December, (and every June and December when the sun is 27 Gemini and 27 Sagittarius), is the ‘line up’ with the galactic equator, an astronomical reference point. It’s the circle on the celestial sphere that is equidistant from the galactic poles, being inclined approximately 62° to the celestial equator and lying about one degree north of the center line of the Milky Way.

The geocentric view – our sun and Earth are at the center of a great celestial sphere of stars. Here’s an animated depiction of equatorial, ecliptic, and galactic coordinates on the celestial sphere. Earth would be at the center of all these intersecting planes. The yellow line indicates the galactic equator. When someone speaks of the galactic equator, think of this imaginary system, which depicts the sky as seen from Earth’s surface. Image via Wikimedia Commons
Twice a year, we ‘line up’ great circles with the line that points to the GC, or Galactic Center. (27 Gemini and 27 Sagittarius) These degrees have not been explored very deeply in an astrological sense, but when there is a powerful collective belief about what might be in, or behind, that massive black hole we call the center of the Milky Way, (and even an inaccurate belief that we are lining up with it in an exact way coupled with ancient cultural reference, mostly misinterpreted) it creates ripples.
(Remember, a belief is a thought you keep thinking. -Abraham)
What does solstice 2012 mean to you?
That’s the key question. As you believe, so shall you experience. Comments? Questions? I’m curious! So curious that Jeannette Maw and I are doing an Align with the Stars talk on this topic, Dec 13. Dial in, or stream online. It’s free
We’ll be talking about collective beliefs and specifically how this Sun conjunct GC, (which is actually on Dec 19) may link to an awakening, a burst of energy that supports the creation of new thoughts and the release of limiting beliefs. If you want to leverage this energy of the collective, look to where 26-28 degrees of Sagittarius is in your natal chart and activate that house and/or planetary placement. (The video tutorial on finding any degree in your chart is here.)
Meanwhile, below are key words for the houses so you can get an idea of what’s the buzz and where to put your focus!
1st house – Appearance, personality traits, outlook on life
2nd house – $$$, resources, talents, peace of mind
3rd house – Teaching, learning, writing, talking, connecting
4th house – Home, family, ancestors, emotional ground
5th house – Creative expression, books, kids, art, romance
6th house – Health, pets, daily routine, magic
7th house – Socially significant relationships, contracts
8th house – sex, death, taxes, shared resources, trust
9th house – New horizons, travel, beliefs, WWW
10th house – Career, mission, profession, public relations
11th house – Friends, goals for the future, groups, collective
12th house – unconscious, dreams, giving and receiving, meditation
If you’re still in doubt about of the ‘line up’ of 2012, remember that consciousness trumps external ‘reality’, every time. Energy follows thought! So you decide where you are going to point yours!
Hi Kim, I am really excited about the upcoming coaching call 12.13. I would greatly appreciate getting some input about my chart during the show as related to it’s topic. Here is my info: D.O.B.: 1.25.74, 5:43pm, Baltimore, MD. Thanks so much!! hasta la vista chica!

Thanks Jennifer. Got you in my ‘call files’ now. See you there!
So if Neptune is four degrees from 27 degrees Sag in the 4th… is that close enough to have an impact?
We are going through a process right now of helping secure our future financially and purchasing a large asset (a rental house). I’ve often felt that although Neptune gets a lot of blurry press that it’s like water… in that if you find the way to look with it’s lenses you can see clearly into the depths if you aren’t afraid to dive in. I’d like to think that this process is more of the clearer vision than not… and the timing is very auspicious… Also by next week we’ll have our first Woofers here on our farm… It seems to all be very “home” oriented and progressive, all happening now.
Jennifer, I like your take on the watery depths of Neptune. Nicely put. Neptune in the 4th house is about creating a sanctuary, about finding a ‘spiritual’ home within your family of all living things. You ‘need’ that in your life!
Neptune is not a personal planet thought, so everyone born within a few years of you has Neptune on or near the GC. You might feel more ‘tuned in’ to collective needs, a kind of intuitive understanding of how compassion and appreciation heals the planet . . . that type of energy . . . but the key here is that the GC is in your 4th house, and Neptune (and Sagittarius) describe how you most authentically experience that area of life. (a visionary, expansive, no boarders sanctuary for all?)
Does that make sense?
Kim you are spot on. Thank you for wording it in such an accessible way too, I appreciate that.
For sure I have such a huge idea of how life can be lived where there is a win/win for all involved. I am forging that now and it feels really good, it’s huge, but it’s happening!
Thank you Kim. this is what I’ve been saying all along – it’s the collective belief around the event that makes it an event. What I’m most fascinated by is the polarising possibilities of the two belief streams: end of world vs transcendence of world. Depending on the individual position, there’s potential for both to exist simultaneously – with a multiplicity of degrees either way. Are we, in fact, looking at a reasonably major many-worlds junction perhaps?
Yes, that’s why I posted the many-wolds rave before hand
So we could think a bit in that direction . . .
*at a reasonable major – not “an” – oh for an edit option!!
I took that option! Thanks for posting the idea in that key question: Are we, in fact, looking at a reasonably major many-worlds junction perhaps?
thank you! all power lies in the hand of she who owns the blog!
Another thing is the precession of the equinoxes has brought the Sun to pass through the galatic equator at the Summer Solstice (Winter Solstice in Northern Hemisphere), which I heard some people contribute to the 2012 hype. Yet this actually began around 1900 and the Sun will continue to be in the vicinity until at least 2200, when it enters Scorpio at the Solstice.
I wrote more about this here:
http://foxoftheoaks.wordpress.com/2012/12/09/broader-influences-from-the-galactic-centre-in-relation-to-2012/
Thanks for that. Great article. It’s different astrologically speaking when we look at the tropical or sidereal zodiac, but your points make sense in that system (considering the procession of the equinox).
What I liked most was your take on how we can’t just ‘cut and paste’ bits of another culture onto ours own without having, and living, a deeper experience of it. Well put.
Glad you dropped in, and gave us the link!
Hi Kim – was wondering what time in Australia that Galactic Centre thing is on?
Hi Ross,
If we use a 1 degree orb, it would be ‘on’ the 18th to the 20th of December:) Light years of wiggle room there
Excellent article, Kim!
Thanks, Angela!
