1) Create your chart online

2) Find your Ascendant and any other point in the chart

3) Look for the Aries glyph and remember the signs run counter clockwise around the chart. In the case of James Bond, on the right, 8 Aries rules (sits on) the 8th house cusp, so we go back 8 degrees into the 7th house to find 0 Aries (8-8 = 0)

Where you find 0 Aries, you want to take positive action from within. Amp up your physical and mental activities, be the boss, lead the way and nurture (respect) your inner warrior. For bond, this would probably mean facing ‘open enemies’ or taking over direction in a partnership.

The cool thing about the Aries Point (AP) is that it’s a place where we catch the eye of the public. So having Mars transit there puts a focus on our PR, how others see us, how they remember us. Mars brings our assertive, directing and action oriented qualities out into the open, in that area of life, and we grab the attention of society. We are seen as commanding, raw and imposing. The New Moon in Pisces is an extraordinary and powerful focus on wherever you have Pisces in your natal chart. There are six planets in Pisces (seven if you count Asteroid 433 Eros, and I do!) and that Water sign stellium is trine the North Lunar Node and Saturn in Scorpio. There is one little glitch in the matrix, and that’s the current state of Mercury retrograde. This is not a ‘bad’ thing; it’ a slow down and reflect thing. On this new moon, which paves the way for the next 28 days (see Tip 0′ the Month), Mercury Rx is square Jupiter, the planet that expands anything he touches. So if there is a pause, miscommunication or time-out (by conscious or unconscious choice) it tends to have far reaching effects, at least, it seems so at the time.

Pisces is the sign that says, let go, muse, create, care, connect, trust. It is activated through any romantic, artistic or meditative venture, immersing in nature (the sea!), honoring your dreams (lucid dreaming and active imagination) and simple acts of love and compassion. March opens with Mercury still retrograde in Pisces and by now you might be seeing the benefits of slowing down, tuning in and reviewing certain goals, choices and decisions. For clues on what needs a ‘rethink’, go the the house(s) in your natal chart where you find 5 – 19 Pisces, and reflect on what is contained there. (Tutorial on plotting transits and Quick House Check here) Mercury will be Rx until March 17 but not out of the retrograde zone until April 6th when it passes 19 degrees of Pisces. Meanwhile, use this time to muse, reflect, let go and take some R&R that isn’t ‘goal focused.’

The first week of March has Sun trine Saturn Rx on the 2nd, a great weekend for pottering, de-cluttering and getting into a quietly productive zone. By the 4th, Mercury Rx conjuncts the Sun, best time ever to gain insights into what’s being going on over the last few weeks. Think ‘window of perspective.’ Take a look.

Just before the New Moon there is a stabilizing vibe guaranteed to shine light on mystery relationship encounters and/or problems you’ve been trying to solve. The best way to allow this clarity in is to let go, loosen your grip, exhale and stop ‘trying’. Period. The more you can meditate (or do your zen thing like walk the dogs, go fish, weed the garden, bake a flan, feed the birds) the easier the ‘message’ gets through. Relax!

The New Moon in Pisces, on the 11th, is powerfully focused with graceful Venus, exalted in Pisces, as the closest aspect. The more you can generate compassion, especially in relationship, the more rich and abundant your life will feel. If there was ever a time to let go of a grudge, release a ‘toleration’ or extend a helping hand, this is it. The New Moon is the final aspect for Moon in Pisces, rendering her ‘void of course‘ for the next few hours until Mars and Moon change signs, crossing into Aries. Take a moment to find where the 0 Aries Point is in your chart and reflect on your relationship to ‘the world at large.‘ Changes hinted at today become evident in April!

By the 17th, Mercury turns direct while the Moon in Gemini conjunct bountiful Jupiter. Even though it’s not time yet to leap ahead at the speed of light (wait for Mercury to gain momentum first) you’d find that things hinted at in December 2012 come to fruition. Be open to opportunities, offers and abundance. Wide open!

The Sun glides into the Warrior Sign of Aries on the 20th, reactivating the Zero Degree Aries Point. Whatever house that falls into in your chart, go there, do that, and celebrate your goals, ambitions, triumphs and battles. Throw a Klingon feast in your honor! Venus in Aries on the 22nd, think red hot pursuit! Fun times, but note Mars conjunct Uranus on the 23rd. It’s a bit of a dog fight – lots of noise and froth. If you don’t want to get your hackles up, chill; if you have unresolved issues with someone, work it out before or after. Nothing’s solved in anger.

Full Moon in Libra on the 27th is a tad explosive. It pulls in jovial Jupiter (which can expand things out of proportion) and triggers rebellious, radical Uranus square major transformation Pluto. Hopefully any bones you had to pick were worked through last week because the leftovers are going to fly off the plate. Purge, cleanse, get it off your chest, renew!

March 28th, while still in the aftermath of the Full Moon, Venus crosses the sun by ‘superior conjunct‘ and swaps from morning star (as she was all of 2012) to evening star. Symbolically, we are talking whole new vibe to all our intimate relationships, creative expression and finances. Yes, they all go together, money and love! The month ends with the Moon in ever optimistic Sagittarius, ready to explore new meaning, expand horizons and adventure.

Mercury turns retrograde, an apparent backward motion, on the 23rd of February and will continue Rx, from 19 degrees of Pisces to 5 Pisces. With Mercury Rx in Pisces, the usual approach, to rethink, reconsider, review, reevaluate goals in the house where Mercury is transiting, expands to ‘rethink everything‘. Pisces has an inclusive orientation (everybody, everywhere, all the time) and that means looking with a single focus isn’t going to be as effective as going full bore, wide open. Allow for everything; exclude nothing is the motto of choice!

Remember Mercury Rx is a Trickster energy. It comes along when we are stuck, either in a habit pattern that no longer serves us, a limiting thought about ourselves or others, or a feeling of being trapped or out of touch with the creative life force. (low energy, lack of enthusiasm, glum = sing of a wrong-for-you goal) When we get into such a state, sooner or later the Trickster comes along to blow the doors and windows open so we can breathe fresh air again. In the sign of Pisces, the trickster turns our current life path into a series of fun house mirrors, showing us twists, turns and perspectives we couldn’t see before. It’s an awakening, supported by a willingness to relax, release resistance and go with the flow.

Here are scopes based on the ‘solar houses’. Where can you ‘muse’ more in your life?

ARIES: With Mercury Rx in your solar 12th house, it’s time to go ‘in’ and listen to your dreams. Not daydream fantasies of achievement, goals, challenges and actions, but really sink deep into the depths of your soul. What messages are welling up from there? Watch for synchronicity, tune into feelings, receive. 

TAURUS: Mercury Rx in your 11th house of friends and groups can turn the usual gatherings into a herd of wild horses, all galloping off in different directions. Not lot of control. Allow for a new view when it comes to social connections, and find ways to relax amid the chaos. Gems emerge when you aren’t looking.

GEMINI: Career, mission or profession can feel like a dream time journey, with the auto focus weaving in and out! This is good news! For the next three weeks you let go of trying to micromanage your future and ‘make things happen.’ Let your neurons relax so the universe can open new doors to infinite possibilities!

CANCER: Travel or study plans turn into the trickster’s playground for the next three weeks. Deep breaths. Remember, it’s not about forging ahead right now, but finding peace and serenity in the midst of contrast. Take time out to reconsider your world view. Is it what you think, or what you are expected to think?

LEO: Mercury Rx in your house of shared resources has you reconsidering any joint financial arrangements, both income and debt. As you sift through possibilities,  you’ll discover creative ways to organize and restructure the boundaries to your liking. You decide, but not yet. Let it marinate for a while. Go have fun.

VIRGO: Communication with partners, practical or intimate, goes a bit zany– muddled and/or blurred! It’s not the best time to come to any conclusions as wires get crossed. Use your gut feelings to make choices that can’t be delayed, and ask what you believe about partnerships. Rethink your relationships, without judgement.

LIBRA: Mercury Rx through your 6th house of well-being says reconsider your lifestyle. Is this really what you want, or are you there because of circumstances ‘beyond your control?’ (ha!) Take stock of your nutrition, exercise, healthy care, comfort zone and routine. Start with what you believe about your body!

SCORPIO: This is a time to go into cruise control on the creative realm and practice the art of allowing. Think play, recreate and relax. Consider where you can expand your beliefs and live more in the ‘now’. The goal is to drop judgment and experience life in the red hot moment. And it will be red hot!

SAGITTARIUS: Thoughts turn to home life, family and symbiotic connections. Give yourself enough ‘me’ time to appreciate recent inner growth and development. Ask what family means to you. Home? Is there anything you believe that could be limiting your experience of others? Listen. Love. Reflect!

CAPRICORN: The Mercury Rx puts the Trickster in control of your tongue. You say one thing and they hear another. Emails, sans body language, get misconstrued. Don’t even think about sending text msg without punctuation. But it’s excellent for revising manuscripts or creative projects put on the back burner. Go there!

AQUARIUS: Use this Mercury Rx to get in touch with what really gives you a sense of peace and happiness, then let go of the outmoded core values and actions. Awareness  through stillness is the first step. It will lead to skill and talent development that is more authentic than you ever though possible.

PISCES: Mercury Rx meanders through your home, work, Self and relationship life. Everything! Best reflect on what you believe about what you do, where you do it, whom you do it with. How? Just set an intention to notice the things you like about your life and smile. Exhale and limitations are going, going, gone.

February Tip o’ the Month

Welcome February! There are some wonderful energies this month, and a few days with hot spots to circle, starting with the 2nd as Mars glides into the sign of Pisces. This is a contrasting place for the inner warrior! Mars wants to take action, be fiery and dominant; Pisces wants to receive through sensitivity and compassion. Healthy aggression meets the quiet philanthropist. If you know what you want, creative inspiration strikes. If you are uncertain, think twice before you launch.

We also have Venus in Aquarius until the 26th, a zany energy when it comes to affairs of the heart. The need for personal space augments (think quadruple) so ease up on commitments of time and energy. Relationships want to explore new territory. The more freedom they have, the better. Think autonomous!

On the 6th, Mercury goes into Pisces (yes, a LOT of Pisces this month). This is where boundaries of the mind loosen up, and we enter ‘Neptune’s word.’ Life becomes rich with synchronicity, symbolic meaning and feelings of connection to all life. Relationships with dishonesty or toxicity at the core go south. Relationships with generosity of spirit and love at the core blossom. It’s easy to spot the difference!

The 10th is an Aquarius New Moon, very social, very opinionated. It will test how strong and confident you are in your own convictions (the stronger you feel, the less you care what others are saying). Mars feeds off of Jupiter so any contrast dials up. (You are unlikely to miss this now, in case you have in the past.) Set clear intentions based on what you know now.

Saturn turns Retrograde on the 19th until July 8th. This is our chance to see if we’ve build solid foundations (in work, business, health, relationships, creativity). What needs our attention? Is there anything to re-do? Mercury doubles up with retrograde motion on the 23rd. Now we ask, ‘what wants a re-think.’ Check where these planets are retrograde in your natal chart (tutorial for creating your chart online here , and for finding a transiting planet here) so you can put your attention and awareness where it will do the most good.

Venus is into Pisces on the 26th, the day of the the Full Moon at 7 Virgo. This is a sensitive hot spot. Know that whatever you feel will seem ten times bigger, and whatever you deliver, could have ten times the impact. Heart on sleeve mode. Feel things out before taking action or saying things that might be hard to take back.

Continuity Conundrums with Mercruy Rx

I posted this on the Supernatrual Underground the other day but didn’t mention the tie in with Mercury Rx. Of course we ‘nod’ more often then! How’s everyone going? Any conundrums?

The ‘Homeric Nod’, or continuity as we now call it, has been a problem for thousands of years. Some deliberate, most accidental, continuity is an age old challenge for storytellers everywhere.

I have a friend who teaches the ins and outs of continuity (known also as script direction). She’s brilliant, and no small fry, having been the ‘scripty’ on films as fabulous as The Matrix series, The Lord of the Rings (all three) and soon to be released, The Hobbit. I did tech support for a class she gave last week and I found film continuity not all that different from the issues a novelist faces. A lot of the techniques for catching these errors in film translate well for authors, and it does make a huge difference, having the continuity water tight.

Why?

Because unless it’s a comedy, seeing or reading an anachronism, inconsistency or error will jolt the reader/viewer out of the participation mystique of the story. Suddenly they are no longer ‘with’ the characters but back in the audience, scratching their heads because a jet just flew over ancient Troy. Oh boy. That’s almost as bad as Edward saying that Carlisle, in 1660, “actually found a coven of true vampires that lived hidden in the sewers of the city . . .” when said sewage system wouldn’t be built for another two hundred years. If the reader knows their history, it’s going to snap them out of ‘it’, and that’s definitely not the goal.

As we can see, big name authors with major publishing houses are not exempt from these problems. Did anyone catch in Chamber of Secrets where Dumbledore tells Harry that Lord Voldemort is the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin. Sure JKR meant descendant but why didn’t the editorial process, and the author, pick that up? (It’s been corrected in later print runs, something film editors can’t do!) Readers are very good at spotting such things and a lot of subsequent print run corrections are due to them writing in. Don’t be shy. Your authors appreciate it!

Usually novelists have more control over continuity than script directors on a film set.  What writer, for example, would have gorgeous Captain Jack Sparrow about to say something mouth-watering-witty with the ticky-tag on his bandanna showing? Novelists aren’t dependent on air traffic, sound artists, make up or wardrobe to get it right. But we do end up being all of the above and more when it comes to the final product – a book in the reader’s hands. When the  ‘poor continuity’ hammer falls; it falls squarely on the author’s head. It’s not like we haven’t had a chance to make corrections.

 Publishing houses may differ slightly but the editorial process looks something like this:

1) Author hands in manuscript

2) Editor makes general comments

3) Author applies suggestions

4) Editor rereads and may return with more suggestions or send on to the structural editor

5) Structural editor edits the entire ms for form, structure, consistency, meaning,  grammar, spelling, context, you name it

6) Ms returns to author to approve or reject suggested changes or rewrite scenes

7) Ms goes to copy editor who edits for grammar and spelling mostly but also consistency, meaning and clarity.

8) Ms returns to author to put in changes/rework

9) Ms goes to proofreaders where one to six proofreaders mark errors and make comments. All the comments from various proofreaders are then transcribed onto one manuscript which the publishing editor reviews. At HarperCollins Aus, this would then result in a phone call (sometimes lasting hours) where the question marks and quirks and ‘ifs’ are discussed with the author. The editor puts in agreed changes.

10) The ms then goes to typesetting and the resulting ‘fourth pages’ are sent to the author to proof.

11) The author catches any errors and shoots the ms back to the publisher (This process is repeated with third, and second pages until they are down to the first pages complete with the dedication, acknowledgements and copyright info.)

12) The author checks those first pages and returns to editor (the turn around time become increasingly shorter with each of these steps)

13) Ms is off to print. Yay!

It’s not a haphazard process, yet still mistakes appear. My friend the script director says that in film, it’s often down to the editing process where they have better shot, even with an inconsistency. They’ll take acting over continuity every time.

Prep for an intense, magnetic and magical month the likes of you haven’t seen all year. It begins the Mercury turning retrograde on the 6th. Just think serendipity a la The Three Stooges. Seriously. You have to laugh, because there’s no point in crying over spilled milk. What there is a point in is being reflective, investigating your motives, asking what any ‘hang up’, slow down, snafu or hitch in the get-along is actually ACCOMPLISHING for you. At first you might want to shout ‘nothing!’ but I promise underneath it all is a message or desired results. Use this time wisely and find what lies beneath. It’s mostly in Scorpio after all. Dig deep!

Neptune direct on November 11th, a 0 Pisces, reanimates any projects or ideas started in February 2012. Take notes, think it through and be ready to sign contracts or launch exciting new creative kittens in December. No need to rush and try to ‘make it happen’ before then. No forcing it.

The Solar Eclipse on the 13th is the first eclipse of the month and highlights the 21st degree of Scorpio. Spot where that is in your chart so you can identify the house and aspects linked to this major celestial event. I’m devoting an entire call to the eclipses this month, so tune in for more details coming shortly. Basically this is a ‘super new moon’ and it’s going to be an amazing energy to set potent intentions for the future. You may not necessarily act on them immediately, but talk about pre-pave! Chiron turns direct the next day so cue up a fresh direction for something initiated back in June 2012 for maximum results.

Mars goes into Capricorn on the 16th, in the sign of his exaltation, a power position and resource for focused work and production. I love this! (but then, I have Mars in Cappy so it’s my once every two year Mars return, yay!)

Venus into Scorpio AND Sun into Sagittarius on the 21st lights a warm and friendly campfire, but things aren’t really going to flow super fast until Mercury turns Direct on the 26th (and I would make it more like early December, after the hot zone Lunar Eclipse on the 28th!) The snake will shed it’s skin! Note where 6 degrees of Gemini and Sagittarius is in your chart for clues of what, when, where and how to let go over this full moon eclipse. Big changes!

March Tip o’ the Month

The month begins with Mercury, god of communication, over the Zero Degree Aries Point, that means into Aries conjunct radical, freedom loving Uranus. It’s a willful, bolshy, independent vibe. There will be speaking of the minds!

On the 5th Venus glides into her sign of rulership, Taurus the Bull. Think sensuality, comfort, peace, abundance, security, lusciousness. The Full Moon on March 8th in Virgo brings moment of clarity but best not to take action while emotions are running high. There could be a ‘disturbance in the force‘ feeling. Remember it’s energy, just as it is, neither a good thing, nor bad.

Mercury goes retrograde on the 12th. I’m doing a talk on this at GVU on the 14th (It may not be listed yet). Basically, Mercury Rx means let go of judgments and re-think the area of life activated by this retrograde (your early degrees of Aries and late degrees of Pisces houses). If you need to work out where that is in your chart, follow the tutorial here. Be sure to ask for help if you get stuck.

Mid-March is potent with Venus over Jupiter trine Pluto trine Mars/Eros/Psyche (an entire post on this coming soon! Also, note Niniane’s comment on the Lilith connection!). This is a grand Earth trine, a symbol creating harmony between your transformational power, healthy aggression, aspirations and core values. Perfect timing for getting into authentic alignment a la speech, actions, goals and compassion.

Mercury will retrograde over mega electric Uranus March 17-19. All original data wants to be backed up well before this date, and not on that old thumb drive that’s been siting on your desk for three years. Back up on new disk or drive and store in another room, Do it NOW. It’s not paranoia; it’s good sense. Whatever was talked out and decided the first week of March is likely to be renegotiated at this time. Interesting.

Sun into Aries on the 20th, spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the sign of its exaltation. Bloom! By the 22nd there is a new moon with Mercury Rx in the shadows. Aries’ ruler Mars is still Rx as well. Plan for baby steps until Mars turns around April 24th. As Mercury slides backward into Pisces, do things to honor your spiritual life. Create a sanctuary. Plant a garden. Connect with nature. Immerse in art, film, literature. Meditate, dance, daydream. Fill your heart with compassion and the wonder of all life.
